We are all Treaty People.

Understanding our rights and responsibilities.

Understanding Indigeneity at Alberta Ballet means understanding whose land we are living on, working on, dancing on and profiting from. Our Treaty Acknowledgement comprises several pieces that attempt to recognize the complex history of those whose lands we are on.

Everyone in Canada has a role to play in establishing healthy, reciprocal relations. These relationships are key to reconciliation.

Treaty acknowledgement is an important step in contributing to a long-term commitment to reconciliation, but it is just one step. In addition to these acknowledgements, organizations must also work to reconciliation in the larger context by supporting genuine, ongoing work:

  • to forge real understanding, and

  • to challenge the legacies of colonialism.

Land Acknowledgement

Alberta Ballet honours the Treaties made throughout Turtle Island.

Alberta Ballet's work extends across Treaties 6, 7 and 8. These are territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Piikani and Kainai), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, the Stoney Nakoda, the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Sicannie, Slavey and Dunnesa. These territories are also home to Métis Nation Region One through Six. We are all Treaty people. We recognize the genocide and colonization endured by Indigenous peoples and are committed to working toward justice and equity through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls To Action.

Notes on our Treaty acknowledgement:

  • Alberta Ballet uses a treaty acknowledgement that encompasses Treaties and nations across Alberta.

  • The pan-provincial treaty acknowledgement is used when audiences may be in multiple treaty regions (such as digital communications).

  • Some land and treaty acknowledgements describe Treaties areas as traditional territories. Alberta Ballet has chosen to remove the word traditional to reinforce the present and ongoing relationship inherent in the treaty acknowledgement.
